Read a story and complete the sentences — practice for the Cambridge A2 Flyers Reading Part 5 exam.
Before You Start
Read the whole story first. Then read the sentences — they are in the same order as the story, so answer them from top to bottom. The answer words are usually in the story, so find the right part and copy them carefully. Always check your spelling.
a cave — a big hole in rock or under the ground.
mountains — very high hills.
dark — when there is little or no light.
disappointed — feeling sad because something was not as good as you hoped.
bats — small animals that fly at night and often live in caves.
a torch — a small light you hold in your hand.
Read the Story
The cave paintings
Last week, Josh went on a school trip to a very old town in the mountains. It was famous because a long time ago people lived in caves there. When Josh and his classmates arrived at their hotel, they found some of the caves in their room. They looked very interesting and the next morning they got up early to go and visit them.
When they went inside the first cave, Josh was unhappy because it was very dark inside. But after a few minutes, he could see the old rock walls, but he was disappointed as there was not much to see.
Suddenly, Josh heard something above his head. He looked up and saw hundreds of bats. ‘Mrs Daniel! There are bats in this cave,’ he whispered to his teacher.
‘Yes, bats like living in caves,’ his teacher answered. ‘It’s OK. They won’t hurt you. Come and look at this.’ Josh’s teacher took a torch out of her backpack and pointed it at one of the walls. There were some beautiful paintings of the people and animals that lived there thousands of years ago.
‘Amazing!’ said Josh. ‘Would you like to live in a cave, Mrs Daniel?’ he asked. ‘No!’ she laughed. ‘I don’t want to live in a cold, dark place like this,’ she said. ‘Come on! Let’s head back to the hotel to draw some pictures of the cave paintings.’
