Audio: listen to the text as you read.

Key Words

  • robot — a machine that can move and do jobs, sometimes controlled by a computer
  • factory — a large building where people and machines make things
  • future — the time that is still to come
  • bored — feeling unhappy because something is not interesting
  • language — the system of words that people use to speak and write (English, Spanish, and so on)

Useful Language

  • how / what / which — how means “in what way” (they think about how to do things).
  • much / many — use many before a countable plural noun (many languages).
  • Verb + -ing — the -ing form (robots work in factories making things).
  • Object pronouns — me, us, them: they don’t look like us.
  • Demonstratives — this, that, these, those: use these before a plural noun (these robots).
  • will for the future — we will have, it will be.

Exam Tip

In Part 4 you choose one word for each gap from three choices (A, B or C). Read the whole sentence before you choose — the words just before and after the gap give you the answer. Watch the grammar traps: how means “in what way”; use many before a countable plural; use the -ing form (making); use the object pronoun us after like; use these before a plural noun; and use will to talk about the future.

Drag the words into the correct gaps to complete the sentences about robots.

🗣️ Speaking

  • Would you like a robot at home? What jobs would you want it to do?
  • Talk about a robot you have seen in a film or on TV. What could it do?
  • Do you think robots are a good thing or a bad thing? Give your reasons.

✍️ Writing

  • Write a short note (25–35 words) to a friend describing your perfect robot. Say what it looks like and what it can do.
  • Write five sentences about robots using the key words from this page.

🔎 Vocabulary challenge

  • Find three more words connected with technology (for example: machine, computer, screen).
  • Match each key word to its meaning, then cover the meanings and test yourself.
  • Use each key word in a sentence of your own.
