- intelligent — able to learn and understand things quickly; clever
- farmer — a person who grows crops or keeps animals on a farm
Useful Language
- Past simple — came, went, saw: for finished actions in the past (they came here 50 years ago).
- have / has — use have with a plural subject (the dogs have long hair).
- Linking words — but, and: but shows a contrast (grey, but the giant is black).
- Object pronouns — us, him, them: use them for more than one.
- Passive with by — the dogs are used by the police (who does the action).
- a / an / the — use a before a consonant sound (a nice dog).
Exam Tip
In Part 4 you choose one word for each gap from three choices (A, B or C). Read the whole sentence before you choose — the words just before and after the gap give you the answer. Watch the grammar traps: use the past simple came for “50 years ago”; use have with a plural subject; but shows a contrast; use them for a plural object; used by the police shows who does the action; and use a before a consonant sound (a nice dog).
