Five Topics Set 4
Listen to five short recordings and choose the correct answer.
Listening Part 4
Practise A2 Key Listening Part 4 with Five Topics Set 4, which focuses on identifying the main idea, gist, or topic of short conversations. Listen to five short monologues or dialogues and answer five multiple-choice questions (with three options each). This listening exercise helps A2 learners improve their ability to understand the overall meaning of spoken English in everyday situations.
- ⏱️ Five Topics Set 4 takes 10–20 minutes
- 💡 Understand the overall meaning of short conversations
- 📶 A2 — the developing stages of learning English
Key Vocabulary
- go camping — to sleep outdoors in a tent, usually for a holiday
- tap — the thing you turn to get water from a sink
- vet — a doctor for animals
- service — the way staff help customers in a shop or restaurant
- signals — equipment beside a railway that tells trains when to stop or go
Useful Language
Places to stay: a hotel · my aunt’s house · camping in a tent
At the restaurant: delicious food · nice waiters · a long wait
Travel problems: the train stopped · a problem with the signals · no phone signal
Exam Tip
Each short recording has one question, usually about the main idea or how someone feels — not every detail you hear. Other options are mentioned to distract you, so wait for the key point (the hotel and aunt’s house were considered, but she went camping; the food and waiters were good, but the service meant a long wait).
Drag the words into the correct gaps to practise the key language from this lesson.
Part 4: Five Topics Set 4
For each question, choose the correct answer.
One. You will hear a girl talking about her summer holiday. Where did she stay?
Girl We had such a great summer holiday in France! My parents wanted to book a hotel, but it was too expensive. We thought about staying at my aunt’s house in Paris, but she was away that week. So we decided to go camping instead. It was my first time sleeping in a tent, and I loved it! We were right next to a beautiful lake, and we could swim every morning.
Now listen again.
Two. You will hear two students talking about their art class. What did the girl forget to bring?
Lucy Oh no! I’ve forgotten something important for art class.
Tom What is it? I’ve got my paint brushes and paper with me.
Lucy I’ve got those too, but I forgot to bring water to clean the brushes. The teacher said we need to bring our own because the taps in the art room don’t work.
Tom Don’t worry — I brought a big bottle. We can share it.
Now listen again.
Three. You will hear a boy talking about his pet. What problem does his pet have?
Boy I’m really worried about my rabbit, Fluffy. She used to eat everything — carrots, lettuce, even her special rabbit food. But for the past few days, she won’t touch anything. She just sits in the corner of her cage and looks sad. My mum says we should take her to the vet tomorrow. I hope she’s going to be okay.
Now listen again.
Four. You will hear two friends talking about a restaurant. What did the man think of the service?
Anna How was that new Italian restaurant last night?
David The food was delicious — the best pizza I’ve ever had. And the waiters were really nice and helpful. But we had to wait over an hour for our food to arrive! Next time I think we should book a table earlier in the evening.
Anna Oh dear! I hate waiting that long when I’m hungry.
Now listen again.
Five. You will hear a woman talking about getting to work. Why was she late?
Woman Sorry I’m late everyone! I left home at the usual time and caught my normal train to the city. But then we stopped in the middle of nowhere for about twenty minutes. The driver said there was a problem with the signals ahead. I tried calling the office, but my phone had no signal. Anyway, I’m here now, so let’s start the meeting.
Now listen again.
That is the end of Part Four.
