How to Play Word Formation

Word Formation is a free online English game that builds your knowledge of word families.
You’re given a root word and you change it into the correct form to complete the sentence — for
example, turning happy into happiness or care into careful.

Step by step

  1. Read the sentence and find the gap.
  2. Look at the root word provided.
  3. Work out what form is needed — noun, adjective, adverb or verb.
  4. Add the right prefix or suffix to form the correct word.
  5. Score a point for each correct transformation.

Tips to form the right word

  • Decide the part of speech first — the words around the gap tell you what’s needed.
  • Learn common endings: -ness and -ment (nouns), -ful and
    -ous (adjectives), -ly (adverbs).
  • Watch for spelling changes, like happy → happiness.

Who it’s for

Items are graded from CEFR Pre-A1 to B1, so Word Formation suits elementary and
lower-intermediate learners and supports exam-style “use of English” practice.
