How to Use Random Word in Class
Random Word reveals one English vocabulary word at a time, with its definition and example appearing progressively. It’s free, runs on the projector, and filters by CEFR level and topic.
Ways to use it in class
- Elicit first: show only the word and have students guess the meaning before you reveal the definition.
- Make a question: reveal a word and ask students to form a question using it.
- Board race: teams write a correct sentence with the word for a point.
- Speaking prompt: students talk for 30 seconds using the word in context.
Why it supports learning
The step-by-step reveal turns a simple word list into guided elicitation: students predict, then confirm, which deepens processing far more than just reading a definition. Asking them to produce a sentence or question pushes them from recognising a word to actually using it — the shift from passive to active vocabulary that real fluency depends on.
Who it’s for
Beginner to intermediate English classes; vocabulary spans CEFR Pre-A1 to B1.
