How to Play The Letters Game

Inspired by the famous TV round, The Letters Game is a free online vocabulary challenge. You choose nine letters, then race to find the longest English word you can make from them in 30 seconds. It’s a fantastic whole-class warm-up and a great solo brain-teaser.

Step by step

  1. Pick nine letters by choosing how many consonants and vowels you want.
  2. When the letters are revealed, the 30-second timer starts.
  3. Find the longest valid English word you can make from those letters.
  4. Type or build your word before time runs out.
  5. Longer words score more — challenge a partner or the whole class to beat your length.

Tips to find longer words

  • Aim for a balance of consonants and vowels — too few vowels makes it hard.
  • Look for endings like -ing, -ed or -er to extend a shorter word.
  • Spot common letter chunks (str, tion) to build around.

Who it’s for

It’s a flexible classroom game for all ages and works beautifully on the projector for ESL groups, with vocabulary suited to Pre-A1 to B1 learners.
