Why it supports learning
Grouping words by meaning helps students build organised mental schemas rather than isolated word lists, and organised knowledge is far easier to store and retrieve. The active sorting — especially when learners have to negotiate and justify their choices with a partner — keeps them processing meaning deeply, which is what turns exposure into actual learning.
